Sample trips
Three ways to shape a roots trip. Each one leaves a day for the village and room for the unplanned.
7 days
Athens and one village
Two days in Athens. Three days based near your village, with a day to walk it and talk to people. Two days to rest or add a nearby town.
10 days
City, mainland, one island
Athens, then the mainland leg that includes your region, then an island for the last days. Good for first-time visitors with family on the mainland.
14 days
The long way back
Athens, two regions, a week for your village and family, and an island at the end. Enough time to stay with relatives without feeling rushed.
What to build into any trip
- A flexible day. Villages run on their own time — meeting a cousin may take the whole afternoon.
- A car, or a driver. Public transport reaches the towns, not always the villages.
- The season. Spring and autumn are milder; summer is busy and booked; many villages come alive for the August holidays and local festivals.
Planning your trip? Many travellers also give to clean water for children in Greece. It is entirely optional.
